A recent report indicates that traffic crashes and fatalities in Lucas County are on the rise. Some of the facts are particularly worrying:
- Persons between the ages of 16 and 35 were at fault in 13 of 25 fatal crashes.
- Forty percent of fatal crashes involved a driver under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both at the time of the crash.
- Of the 20 fatalities where seatbelts were available and belt use was known, only 3 people were buckled at the time of the crash.
Young drivers are especially susceptible to traffic accidents. It is important that parents communicate to their teen the inherent dangers in driving, specifically at night when drunk drivers permeate the roads. Also, parents must emphasize the importance of seatbelt use so that their teen remains safe on the road.
